Sensor Control
What does each sensor do?
I have a ’96 Dodge Avenger 2.5 V6, that’s an automatic. I’m trying to fix it up but there’s a couple issues with it:
A) The car doesn’t want to shift out of 2nd gear. It feels like it’s unable to do so.
B) The speedometer needle goes all the way to the top speed (past 140 mph) no matter what.
I’m told that I need to replace the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). My Haynes manual shows how to replace the sensor. After doing the research, I’ve found out that there’s two of them, however??? Apparently there’s an input VSS and and output VSS. Just for the sake of knowing, what does each sensor control (i.e. which sensor controls the speedometer, which one controls the shifting of the transmission, etc…)??? And is this an easy fix??? Any help is welcome and thanked. Thanks in advance!
The output speed sensor controls the speedometer and the input controls the transmission.
It is an easy fix if you are at least halfway handy with tools, I THINK it is a dry fix on an Avenger but I’m not sure, in other words no loss of ATF. Some speed sensors are plastic so go easy with the torque and let the O-ring or gasket do the sealing.
A failed speed sensor will cause the symptoms you describe.
